How to connect MS SQL Server database
SQL Server Management Studio software is used to connect with MS SQL Server instance. There are few steps need to follow and we should be able to connect MS SQL Server.
- Launch SSMS - SQL Server Management Studio
- Database Engine - Choose the Server type
- Server Name - Enter the server name
- Authentication - Window or SQL Server Authentication
- Login Details - Enter Username and Password
- Connect - Click on Connect button
Let's understand step by step how to connect MS Sql Server instance with SQL Server Management Studio.
Step-1: You may launch SQL Server Management Studio by using Start menu or from taskbar if you have added launch icon in window taskbar.
Step-2: After launch, By default it will ask to login via different modes. You may choose either “Windows Authentication” mode or “SQL Server Authentication” mode as shown in following screen. It will also display other options like Server Type, Server Name, Authentication, Username and Password.
If “Windows Authentication” selected, it will directly connect with SQL Server.
If “SQL Server Authentication” mode selected, then Username and Password are mandatory to enter and click on Connect button.
If, it doesn’t open connection dialog box by default, you may use Connect – SQL Database Engine and connect it as per below shown screen.
After connection successfully established with SQL Server, it will display following interface screen where you can manage databases, execute queries etc...
It also display other options to monitor and administer SQL Server with having Security, Server Objects, Replication, PlyBase and Management from left panel as shown in above screen.
We should be able to create a new database and run the queries from here.
Step-3: You may see some default databases, tables are already created under System Database.
Step-4: Now, you may run the sample query with system created database and tables.
